THE GREAT OUTDOORS
While best known for its beaches, Girona has eight National Parks, with habitats ranging from wetlands home to seabirds, waterfowl and otters, to La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, where miles of walking trails weave through a fairytale forest of oaks and beeches. The Gavarres Mountains are a rock climber’s paradise, while hikers and cyclists can enjoy the meadows of the Pyrenees foothills. When the pull of the Med becomes too strong to ignore, pretty seaside villages, hidden coves and crystal clear waters await.
CULTURE
Girona’s self-named capital city has both big attractions and plenty of secret appeal. Start from the central Girona Cathedral, then wander at will through atmospheric Medieval lanes, picturesque squares and El Call, the historic Jewish Quarter. One of the city’s most iconic views is found along the Onyar River, where brightly painted houses throw a rainbow reflection onto the water. Or stroll along the tree-lined Rambla de la Llibertat where you’ll find an eclectic mix of shops, cafes and historic arcades. Ideal for people watching, the Rambla also hosts weekend markets with an eclectic mix of crafts, food and vintage finds.
FOOD & DRINK
Girona is a feast for all the senses, but its food scene deserves special mention. Dining can be casual and impromptu, with endless cosy tapas bars to choose from, and plenty of sun dappled squares for a refreshing beer or cocktail. Or settle in for a truly unique experience at El Celler de Can Roca, one of the world’s best restaurants. This chic bistro is a family run affair, serving innovative takes on traditional Catalan recipes.
